How to Give Third-Party Authorization (TPA) to Patriot for Maryland FAMLI (MD PFML)

Steps to accept Patriot's invitation and sign the Power of Attorney (POA) in the Maryland FAMLI portal so Patriot can file and pay Maryland Paid Family and Medical Leave for you.

Applies to: Patriot Full Service Payroll customers with employees who work in Maryland. Maryland Paid Family and Medical Leave (MD PFML) contributions begin with pay dates on or after January 1, 2027.

Maryland Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI), also called Maryland Paid Family and Medical Leave (MD PFML), requires employers to link a payroll provider as a Third-Party Agent (TPA) in the Maryland FAMLI portal.

Patriot needs Maryland FAMLI TPA access to file Maryland FAMLI quarterly reports and pay Maryland FAMLI contributions for Full Service Payroll Customers. You grant Patriot Maryland FAMLI TPA access by accepting Patriot's invitation and signing a Power of Attorney (POA) in the Maryland FAMLI portal.

How Maryland FAMLI TPA access works

Maryland FAMLI TPA access always starts with an invitation from Patriot. You cannot add Patriot as your Maryland FAMLI TPA on your own.

  1. Patriot's tax team sends a Maryland FAMLI TPA invitation using your federal EIN and email address.

  2. Maryland FAMLI emails you a link to sign the Maryland FAMLI Power of Attorney (POA).

  3. Your company's Authorized Officer accepts the invitation, selects Patriot's access, and signs the Maryland FAMLI POA within 30 days of Patriot's invitation.

Although the Maryland FAMLI uses your Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), your company must be registered with Maryland FAMLI before you can sign the Maryland FAMLI POA. If you have not registered, the Maryland FAMLI invitation email directs you to register first at account.paidleave.maryland.gov. Patriot cannot register with Maryland FAMLI for you.

Only your company's Authorized Officer in the Maryland FAMLI portal can see and accept Patriot's Maryland FAMLI TPA invitation. The Authorized Officer must verify their identity through Login.gov.

Steps to accept Patriot's Maryland FAMLI TPA invitation

Step 1: Open the Maryland FAMLI invitation

Open the email from Maryland FAMLI and click the link to sign the Power of Attorney. If your company is not registered with Maryland FAMLI yet, complete the Maryland FAMLI registration when prompted. After registration, the Maryland FAMLI portal prompts the Authorized Officer to add permissions and sign the POA.

Step 2: Find Patriot's pending request

If your company is already registered with Maryland FAMLI, the Authorized Officer logs in to the Maryland FAMLI portal. Patriot's pending Maryland FAMLI TPA request appears after login. You can also find the request on the Manage Third-Party Agents page inside your FAMLI portal.

Step 3: Choose Patriot's Maryland FAMLI access

Select the access Patriot needs to file and pay for you:

  • Submit quarterly reports

  • Submit payments

Step 4: Sign the POA

Sign the POA in the MD FAMLI but be sure to leave the Maryland FAMLI POA end date blank.

  • If you enter an end date and that date passes, Patriot's Maryland FAMLI TPA access ends and Patriot must send a new invitation.

What if the Maryland FAMLI invitation expired?

A Maryland FAMLI TPA invitation expires if the Maryland FAMLI POA is not signed within 30 days. You cannot restart an expired Maryland FAMLI invitation yourself. Email Patriot's tax team ([email protected]) and ask them to send a new Maryland FAMLI TPA invitation.
